Google took a slightly different approach with the Google Pixel 5 in 2020. Instead of launching a device with flagship specs, it included a midrange processor and lowered the price a little. While that made the Pixel series a little more accessible, it did leave some wanting a true flagship Pixel experience. It's possible that could come in the Google Pixel 6.
There have been tons of rumors and leaks related to the upcoming phone, and we now have a pretty good idea of what the device might look like. Excited about Google's next stock Android phone? Here's everything we know about the Pixel 6 so far.
Google Pixel 6 models
It looks like Google may end up releasing two devices in the series this year. According to leaks, there will be both a standard Google Pixel 6, and a Google Pixel 6 Pro. The Pixel 6 Pro will likely offer a larger display. It may also have a little more RAM and a bigger battery too.
We'll have to wait and see if these phones launch at the same time, and if they end up offering very similar specs. Hopefully, the "Pro" model will end up just being a larger version of the Pixel 6 -- as it means those that buy the standard-sized phone won't lose out on any features.
Google Pixel 6 design
It looks like Google will radically change the overall design of its phones for the Pixel 6. The first Pixel 6 design leak came courtesy of YouTuber Jon Prosser, who claimed to have seen renders of the phone, and created his own images based on those renders. These images show a device with a seriously emphasized horizontal camera module on the back, with what looks like three cameras. That's up from the two cameras on the Pixel 5.
The series may offer three-tone color schemes too. The leaked renders seen so far offer a kind of beige-and-orange color scheme, with a black camera module. It's definitely a unique look. We'll have to wait and see what other colors are on offer by the Pixel 6 series.
On the front, the device should end up looking relatively modern. It seems as though both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will offer an edge-to-edge display with a small hole-punch cutout in the top-left for the front-facing camera.
The two Pixel 6 models will likely offer a similar design, except, of course, for their size. The smaller device, according to Prosser, will come with a 6.4-inch display. The larger device will step things up to a 6.71-inch display. Both displays will be OLED, though we don't yet know the resolution.
Google Pixel 6 specs
The new phone may represent a big step towards the company reducing its dependence on others. According to a number of rumors, Google is developing its own processor for the phone -- meaning the device likely won't have a Qualcomm chipset in it.
There's a lot we don't yet know about Google's new chipset, which is said to be codenamed "Whitechapel." Rumors indicate that the processor likely won't quite compete with Apple and Qualcomm's top chips, at least in raw performance. Instead, Whitechapel will reportedly focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence as a way to process intensive tasks. We'll have to wait and see if that ends up being true. Whitechapel is reportedly being co-developed with Samsung, and has the model number GS101.
Apart from the Whitechapel chip, rumors indicate that the standard device will offer 8GB of RAM, and the Pixel 6 Pro up to 12GB.
Google Pixel 6 camera
Leaks indicate that the camera will be another point of difference between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. According to Jon Prosser, both phones will come with a 50-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera. The Pixel 6 Pro, however, will add to that with a 48-megapixel telephoto camera. That would be a little frustrating. Users should be able to choose a phone based on its size, not be forced into using a larger phone because it has a better camera.
Of course, camera quality is likely to be excellent. Pixel cameras have always been able to take high-quality photos, and that's unlikely to change. We'll have to wait and see if the inclusion of the Whitechapel chip has a big impact on the overall aesthetic of Pixel-taken photos. These days, image processing is a big factor in image quality.
The smaller device may come with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, while the Pixel 6 Pro will step that up to 12 megapixels.
Google Pixel 6 price and release date
We don't yet have exact dates for when the series will be released. But we can speculate. Pixel phones have traditionally been released in October, and we expect that to remain true this year.
We have no idea how much the phones will cost though. The Pixel 5 starts at $700. It's possible that Google will want to position the Pixel 6 as a premium device, and raise the price of the phone.
We'll update this article as we hear more about the Pixel 6, so make sure to check back.
