AirPods and HomePods can’t stream the new lossless Apple Music

Apple Music Lossless

Just as rumors claimed recently, Apple announced lossless music streaming support for Apple Music this week. The upgrade comes free of charge to all Apple Music subscribers, Apple announced. Apple will use a new codec, Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), for its catalog of more than 75 million songs. “This means Apple Music subscribers will be able to hear the exact same thing that the artists created in the studio,” Apple explained in the announcement.

But none of the AirPods and HomePods models you can buy right now will support the new Lossless Audio mode, even if you set it up on your iPhone and other devices that can stream Apple Music and beam it to supported earphones and speakers.
